Didn`t make it to Anglesey this weekend for various reasons so decided to get up early see what bait i had in the freezer and try the mersey.Got to the mark at 7am and wasnt surprised to see a mate of mine whom i fish with in the winter months getting suited in the car park.We had a nice slow setup as we were planning on fishing the flood low being 730ish.Usual rigs and tactics pulley rigs rotten btm`s ....the only difference was Kev was on the ball and had loads of fresh bait with him...lug,peeler and frozen squid.Things were slow for the first hour apart from my rod lurching over as i was into a gull.....which flew into my line,..and the tackle losses were heavy with kev finding the snags and losing 3 leads on 3 casts he wasnt a happy man......The sun was out now but wasnt warming us much in the chilly wind.
About 2 hrs in kev had a great knock and it was game on.......................
After a brief tussle he had opened his account with a nice keeper and the 3 lost leads were long forgotten.....
About 30mins later he was in again.........
Meanwhile i wasnt getting much in the way of bites...then i had a good pull down....only to strike into a snag and snap off .
Kev on the other hand was into another codling but this one went back at 34cm........followed by a doggie.
Eventually i had a fish.......a whiting lol
At the top of the tide we were both gettin a lot of bites from the small stuff...then the tide started to pull too hard signalling time to pack up.....but Kev wasnt finished and only had another keeper....making it 3keepers for him.....
Was a great day out and i learnt the hard way early in the season the fish seem to prefer the fresh peeler as all fish were taken on it...i had the whitng on frozen peeler.......will be back soon...........all kev needs now is lots of chips, well done to him a nice way to start his cod fishing season.
